Ok, now…on to today’s excitement! Today, I have a wonderful layout to share with you! My great friend (and CT Member), Laura, made this gorgeous piece of art with my Spotlight Word Art Freebie! The white frame around the photo, black tab, flat white cardboard, and large torn cardboard are from my Old Stuff Collection! Wow, she makes my designs look GOOOOD, doesn’t she?
Looking at this layout made me remember some of the family cars we had while I was growing up. We had an old caramel colored two-door something or other, a station wagon, a few others that I vaugely remember. I know that at one point there was an El Camino in our driveway, but I seem to remember that being a car that my dad was just driving for work for a while. I’ll have to ask him tonight.
Either way, family vehicles seem to hold a special place in our hearts. In a comment here, tell me about a car your family had (or if you didn’t have a car, tell me another funny family memory). What was special about it? What did you hate about it? What great trips did you take in it?
By leaving a comment you will be entered to win a $5.00 coupon to my store. Easy-peasy, right? Make sure to comment by tonight (April 14, 2009) at 11:59 pm. I’ll announce the winner tomorrow!
Oh, and in honor of those childhood family vehicles that took us on many interesting road trips, I’ve put my Travel and Road Trip Word Art Combo Pack on sale for just $2.00 today only! Don’t forget – I’m having a 25% off sale all week in my shop!
My new releases for the week are included in that sale, so check them out!

I just love that layout with the old stuff collection. Very inspriting!
Did not have a special car growing up but about 17 years ago my husband rebuilt and 1951 Mercury and we cruised from Chicago to California in it – just a fun car to get in and just drive
I remember taking 8-10 hour road trips to visit far-away family. The whole crew–all 7 of us–would pile into a 7-passenger van (we had several over the years) with plenty of snacks, drinks, books, and toys (computers most recently!) and hit the road. My favorite van was one with cool “running lights” inside around the windows. They reminded me of Christmas lights and made it easy to read!!
Oh jodie, I can tell you tons of car story, but I will choose one ( I know, I am sooo nice…;-) yes that is what you gonna say when you will have read this one)
I love a green citroen car ( Don’t know if this brand was-is known in US, it is french) colour called “almond green”. I choosed the colour when I was somethng like 6years old.
I loved it really much, until i got sick in it, and pucked all around. since then, I can tell you that “almnd green” colour smell pretty bad…
And then I keep hating this car…
I told you, you will be happy that I just tell you one car story;-)
thanks
val
My favorite car was the “Mercedes”. We lovingly called “her” that because in truth she was a 1970s model Buick LaSabre. My parents bought it when my sister and I were getting old enough to drive. They wanted us in a BIG car so we’d be more safe. I can still remember how the old car leather (?) and worn dashboard felt. Water would come up from the floorboards when it rained a lot. I remember the fell of pushing the old radio buttons — the kind where the knobs are coming straight out like on an old jukebox. When we got her she was almost 200,000 miles so when we turned that over we celebrated — and tried to add something special — was it a hood ornament — like real Mercedes cars did.
This was the car of picking up girlfriends and hanging at the mall. The car of high school romance — or at least stalking our current crushes…Getting to band practice and synchronized swimming…
Ok, tooooo long! Thanks for the memory stirring!
Beautiful layout! Great job on complimenting the wonderful old photo!
My Mother had an old Orange VW bug. We learned that we could take it out of gear and push it down the road. Several times she had to walk down the block looking in driveways for her car, lol. We loved moving it on her. In the winter we used to pack snow around the tires and then pour water on the snow…her tires would be frozen tight to the driveway and she’d be stuck like a bug in a rug, lol…We loved that Orange VW.
I think the funniest memories I have of driving around in vehicles are the lack of seat belts. Today, I wouldn’t dream of getting into a vehicle without buckling up and all my kids have had the various regulation car seats, etc. Back in the day, we would argue over who got to ride on the “hump” and if you were small enough sometimes you slept on the back window ledge!! Thank goodness we survived those excursions.
Well I dont have an old car story but the layout is fabulous! Everything goes together so well….wonderful job
We always had station wagons growing up. I particularly remember having a Hornet Sportabout; green with the faux wood on the sides.
I remember the horn being rather different. It was a strip of rubber that went around the inside rim of the steering wheel. The horn would honk if you pressed that rubber strip with your fingers. One night, in the middle of the night of course, the horn went off all by itself and would not stop. My dad started ripping off that rubber strip until it stopped. Good times!
Super cool LO! love the old look and they car keys are so cool!!
We had an old Volvo station wagon with one of those seats in the back that folded up out of the floor and faced backwards. My brothers and I called it the “way-back” and used to fight over who got to sit back there… We’d entertain ourselves on long car trips by waving at the people driving the car behind us…
I don’t want to be in it for the GC, but I just have to say that we’ve had some doozy of cars in our family. There was the red station wagon that had been a hotel catering vehicle, the purple station wagon, the yellow corolla that went through all three kids…by the time I got it there was a hole in the passenger side floor and the muffler was in the back seat! =) And I have a fond memory of my mom’s royal blue something-or-other that I grew up with. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Jodie! I am loving this week!!
LOL What fun…well my dad had this car back in 1969 and it was back before all the cars had seatbelts…and before there were seatbelt laws or child carseat safety laws. We were moving from CA to KS…sightseeing on the move across country…I was in 5th grade…all I remember about the whole move was 1) packing up all my toys the day after Christmas (and seeing them a month later when we unpacked) … 2) sitting in the back seat the whole way with my 14 month old sister…she wasn’t in a seat…mom had her port-a-crib taking up 3/4 of the back seat… my sister could play in the crib the whole day…and I was scrunched in the back seat feeling carsick the whole way. blech! …keep in mind this was before the first gameboy was made… and reading in the car made me sick…so I sat for DAYS and DAYS watching my sister through the rungs of the crib. …wait was this supposed to be a FOND car memory??
We used to have a car curse in our family. They always seemed to be breaking down for one reason or another. One time my mom’s car was being repaired (again) and so she borrowed my sister’s car to take to work that week….then it too broke down! So we borrowed back the car that my dad had given away when he bought his new one and it also broke down that week. When we thought our luck couldn’t get any worse my dad’s new car’s transmission went.
We’ve had so many cars! Including a “wood paneled” station wagon.
But I think my favorite car was a little 2-door, hatch-back, 4-speed, light blue Plymouth Turismo. Probably because I learned to drive on it.
I’m surprised my parents recovered from all the whiplash!
And the LO featuring the car is GOOD!
When I was very, very young, around age 2 or so, my dad, mom, my 5 older brothers, and I all loaded up to take a weekend trip. What makes this story so crazy is that all 8 of us squeezed into a 1970 Volkswagon Beetle. This was before the days of seatbelts, so my 3 oldest brothers sat in the back seat, the younger 2 boys sat in the area behind the back seat, and I was in the middle of my mom and dad in the front, on my potty chair. I don’t remember this trip, but from what I’ve heard, it was quite an adventure. Thanks for the chance to win!
I remember the Ford Pinto that we had. After my little brother was born, before my Mom got her new car. I remember when we all had to go in the car I got stuck in the middle because I was the smallest. That Ford Pinto then became my first car once I got my license. What great memories…….
Oh my! The stories I could tell! This is a great idea for making layouts, too. (I’m probably late for the drawing – I’m on Pacific Time, but that’s OK, just thought I share anyway, lol.)
My parents bought a new (1967?) Chevrolet station wagon – it was a nice metallic light blue color. One afternoon, my dad took my sister and I out on some errands. I think I was 5 or 6, and my sister is 2 years younger. He had to drop something off at his sister’s house, and left my sister & me in the car. Before he left the vehicle, he said something like, “Be good! Don’t do anything like chop the seats with the hatchet!” I don’t know WHY there was a hatchet in the car, but there was. It was fairly small, but sharp. My father hadn’t been in the house too long, before my sister (YEP!) picked up the hatchet and made a couple of rows of little hack marks along the top edge of the front seat. Of course, I told her she was going to be in big trouble. LOL! What possessed my father to suggest using the hatchet on the seats, I don’t know. I doubt if my sister or I would even have thought of doing such a thing. Ah, the power of suggestion!
Thanks for the idea, and for letting me share.
